Christina M. Cabanillas

President of AWLA

a message from our President:

As we approach the 30th anniversary of the Arizona Women Lawyers Association, I would like to extend a warm welcome to returning AWLA members and to encourage non-members to join our organization.  This year is shaping up to be another fun-filled one, providing many opportunities to renew old friendships and make new ones, and to continue to fulfill our mission statement.  I hope that you will attend our luncheons and special events, and volunteer your time to help AWLA.  Thank you very much for your participation and support.

AWLA  MISSION STATEMENT

Arizona Women Lawyers Association promotes and encourages the success of women lawyers by providing members with information and support, by fostering connections among women lawyers, and by monitoring and celebrating the successes of members and women lawyers at large in our community.

MARICOPA CHAPTER EVENTS

Mentors Needed

The Maricopa Chapter of the Arizona Woman Lawyer's Program is seeking mentors to participate in a mentoring program with students from the Arizona State Sandra Day O'Connor school of law as well as the Phoenix School of Law.  There is an increased need for mentors this year as the students are all very excited and eager to learn from attorneys here in Maricopa County.  Please avail yourself of this rewarding opportunity to not only mentor, but to become part of a network of students and attorneys who are devoted to improving the legal community for now and the future.    Questions may be directed to mho@polsinelli.com or katea.ravega@quarles.com

To sign up to be a Mentor, download this document and fax it to (602) 476-1968

You can read more about it and find out where to buy Lauren Stiller Rikleen's book, "Ending the Gauntlet: Removing Barriers to Women's Success in the Law," at the Bowditch Institute for Women’s Success.

The resignation of Justice David Souter provides a critical opportunity to appoint a woman to the Supreme Court.

When Justice Sandra Day O'Connor resigned, the country lost a brilliant judge whose life experiences contributed to the influential voice she brought to the Court.  It is this voice and perspective that reinforces why diversity at the table -- and the bench -- results in better decision-making.

We must work together to ensure that the Supreme Court will reflect our nation's richness of diversity.

The following is a link to an article I wrote on the topic and which was published in the Boston Globe:  High Court Pick Should Be A Woman
